Gravel vs. Recycled Asphalt Driveways: Which Is Right for Your Property?

For rural and residential properties in Middle Tennessee, the two driveway surfaces we install most are traditional gravel and recycled asphalt (often called crushed asphalt or RAP). Both are far more affordable than hot-mix paving, and both perform well — but they suit different situations. Here's the practical comparison.

Gravel: flexible, repairable, and budget-friendly

A properly built gravel driveway is layers, not just rock: a compacted subgrade, a base course of larger stone, and a top course of crusher run that locks together under traffic. Built that way, gravel handles heavy vehicles, drains well, and is easy to top-dress and regrade over the years.

Gravel's main maintenance is periodic regrading to fix washboarding and replacing stone that migrates. On steep grades, loose gravel can wash in heavy rain — which is why drainage design matters as much as the stone itself.

Recycled asphalt: gravel's tougher cousin

Recycled asphalt is milled-up old pavement crushed into aggregate. The leftover binder in the material is the trick: under compaction and summer heat, the particles knit together into a semi-solid surface that sheds water, resists ruts and washout, and kicks up far less dust than gravel.

It costs somewhat more than gravel up front but typically needs less ongoing maintenance, and it holds slopes better. The trade-offs: appearance is darker and less uniform than fresh gravel, and quality varies by source — good material and proper compaction make or break the result.

Which one should you choose?

Choose gravel when budget leads, the drive is relatively flat, or you like the classic look and don't mind occasional regrading. Choose recycled asphalt for steeper grades, high-traffic drives, dust-sensitive areas near the house, or when you want the lowest long-term maintenance without paying for hot-mix paving.

Either way, the surface is only as good as what's under it. The base, the crown, and the drainage — ditches, culverts, and slope — determine whether a driveway lasts two years or twenty.
